The short answer
ChatGPT ads cost about $3 to $5 a click, or $25 to $60 per 1,000 views, by the figures agencies publish.
Early tests report cheap clicks that convert less often than Google search: 0.8% against 6.64% in one 30-day B2B test. Test it with a fixed budget after your search ads work and are measured.

What ChatGPT ads cost
You pay per click or per 1,000 views. Anyone in the launch countries can buy self-serve, with no minimum spend since May 2026. Every price below comes from an agency or vendor that sells the service, so read it as a range, not a rate card.
| Question | Number | Source |
|---|---|---|
| What does a click cost? | $3 to $5 is the suggested starting bid | WebFX, June 2026, citing OpenAI bid guidance |
| What do 1,000 views cost? | Up to $60 by default. Some advertisers report $25 | WebFX, June 2026 |
| What do agencies pay per 1,000 views? | $25 to $35 on average, about $15 for a niche prompt, up to $60 for a contested one | Brainlabs, 2026 |
| Is there a minimum spend? | None self-serve since May 5, 2026. Earlier launch partners faced six-figure minimums | WebFX, June 2026 |
| What do managed buys ask for? | Criteo recommends $50,000 to $100,000 a month. StackAdapt about $50,000 | Brainlabs, 2026 |
What early advertisers report
Three published tests give real numbers. The pattern is the same in all three: clicks are cheap or average, and fewer people buy or enquire than from search.
One account per test, written by the firm that ran it. None reports a sale yet. Treat the table as early signal.
| Test | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| B2B compliance services, 30 days | Clicks cost $0.76 against $10.46 on Google. 0.8% of visitors became leads against 6.64%. Cost per lead $92.21 against $157.57. Final sales not known yet, because the sales cycle is long | StubGroup (agency), October 2026 |
| Ad research tool, two weeks | $200 spent, about 5,000 views, about 40 clicks, about $5 a click, zero conversions. A two-week budget ran out in about two days | adlibrary (vendor), July 2026 |
| Retail, travel and leisure clients | 1% to 1.5% of viewers clicked. Ads written as an answer drew 1.26%, sales-style ads 0.66%. The agency has not yet seen buying intent to match search | CTI Digital (agency), July 2026 |
Who sees ChatGPT ads
Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. People on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans see no ads. Advertisers in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can buy, and the UK is the first European market.
The ad matches the question the person typed, not who they are. There is no audience targeting, no demographic filter and very little control over location (Brainlabs). A business that serves one city pays for views from everywhere.
How to tell whether it paid
OpenAI added a site pixel and a server connection for conversions in May 2026 (WebFX). Reports show views, clicks, spend, click rate, cost per click and conversions. A conversion-optimized objective began rolling out in June for advertisers with tracking in place (adlibrary).
Those numbers stop at the form. What you need is booked work. Tag every ad link with its source, then check that a test enquiry lands in your CRM with that source attached. The five-check attribution guide covers the handoff.
Judge it on the same terms as search. Count only leads old enough to have closed. Before you move budget between the two, run the Attribution Stress Test on the leads with no outcome yet.
What a fair test costs
A test is only fair if it produces enough leads to judge. At the 0.8% rate in the B2B test, 10 leads take 1,250 clicks. At search's 6.64%, they take 151.
So the budget depends on the click price you get. The table puts the same money into search at the B2B test's own Google numbers: $10.46 a click and 6.64%. In that account, ChatGPT beat search only while a click cost under about $1.26. This is arithmetic on one account, not a forecast.
| ChatGPT click price | Cost of 10 leads at 0.8% | Same money on search |
|---|---|---|
| $0.76, the B2B test result | $950 | About 6 leads |
| $3, the low suggested bid | $3,750 | About 24 leads |
| $5, the high suggested bid | $6,250 | About 40 leads |
Is it worth testing for a business like yours?
My read: test it if you sell across a country or online, your search ads already work and are measured, and you can set aside the budget above without missing it. Skip it for now if you serve one city, or if you cannot yet trace a lead from ad to booked job.
There is a free route next to the ads. ChatGPT often names businesses that other trusted sites cite. That costs links and good pages, not media. See how a business gets cited by AI answers.
To see where a test fits in next year's money, put your revenue in the marketing budget calculator.
A 30-day test plan
Seven steps. One owner. One number at the end.
- Pick one offer that already sells through Google search. Do not test a new offer and a new channel at once.
- Install the pixel and tag every link with its source. Send one test enquiry and confirm it reaches the CRM with that source.
- Set a fixed budget for about 1,250 clicks at the price you see in week one. Cap the daily spend, because budgets can run out in days.
- Write the ad as an answer to the question, not as a pitch. In one agency's data, answer-style ads drew nearly twice the clicks.
- Name one person who owns the test. Every Monday, they read the CRM and report leads, booked calls and cost per booked call.
- After 30 days, wait out your normal sales cycle. Then compare cost per booked job with search over the same weeks.
- Keep it only if it beats search or reaches buyers search does not. Otherwise stop, and keep the lesson.
What to check this week
Three checks, under an hour.
- Ask whether anyone runs ChatGPT ads for you now. If they do, ask what the ads are measured on.
- Check that your search leads reach the CRM with their source. If they do not, fix that before any new channel.
- Ask ChatGPT the question your best customer asks. See which businesses it names, and whether you are one of them.
Questions leaders ask
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
About $3 to $5 a click is the suggested starting bid, or up to $60 per 1,000 views by default (WebFX, June 2026). Agencies report paying $25 to $35 per 1,000 views on average (Brainlabs). One B2B test paid $0.76 a click over 30 days (StubGroup).
Is there a minimum spend for ChatGPT ads?
Not for self-serve. OpenAI removed the minimum when it launched the self-serve Ads Manager beta on May 5, 2026 (WebFX). Managed buys through partners ask for much more: Criteo recommends $50,000 to $100,000 a month (Brainlabs).
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
Logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users see no ads. Advertisers in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can buy, with the UK the first European market (adlibrary, July 2026).
Can I target ChatGPT ads to my city?
Barely. Targeting follows the question the person types. There is no audience or demographic targeting and very little control over location (Brainlabs). A business that serves one area pays for views from everywhere.
Do ChatGPT ads work for lead generation?
Early results are mixed. One 30-day B2B test got leads 41% cheaper than Google, but only 0.8% of visitors became leads against 6.64% (StubGroup). A two-week test with $200 got zero conversions (adlibrary). No published test reports closed sales yet.
Are ChatGPT ads better than Google ads?
Not yet, for most businesses. Clicks can be cheaper, but people convert less often, and targeting and reporting are younger. Test ChatGPT after your search ads work and are measured, and judge both on cost per booked job.
How do I track conversions from ChatGPT ads?
Install the OpenAI pixel or the conversions server connection, launched May 2026 (WebFX), and tag every link with its source. Then check in your CRM that the lead arrives with that source, and track it to a booked job.
