CMO Salary in 2026: Full-Time, Fractional and Interim Pay

What a CMO costs in 2026: average salary from six sources, pay by company size, fractional CMO hourly and monthly rates, interim fees and the real first-year cost of a full-time hire.

By Timur GrigorchukPublished November 7, 202612 min read

The short answer

A full-time CMO salary in the US averages $177,421 to $225,908 in base pay, depending on the source, and total pay reaches $293,575 once bonus is added (Indeed and Built In, 2026).

A fractional CMO costs $7,500 to $12,000 a month, about $174 an hour. An interim CMO costs $15,000 to $40,000 a month. Counting search, benefits and ramp, a full-time hire costs about $284,000 in year one.

In this article 11 sections
Year-one cost of a CMO by option: full-time hire $284,409, agency lead $120,000 to $240,000 a year, interim CMO $75,000 to $200,000 for 3 to 6 months, fractional CMO $90,000 to $144,000 a year.
Total first-year cost to the owner. The full-time figure uses the same inputs as the Megawebvision cost calculator; the other three are published ranges, linked at the end of the article.

How much does a CMO make in the US?

Between $177,421 and $374,414 a year, depending on whom you ask. Five salary sources, all updated in 2026, give five different averages. The gap is real, and the next section explains it. Pay also differs by city, company size and experience, so start with the basis of each number and then pick the one that matches your company.

Base pay is not the cost. Bonus, benefits and a search fee come on top, and the year-one sum below shows how much. The fractional CMO cost page uses the same inputs.

Government data sits lower. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage of marketing managers at $166,790 and of advertising and promotions managers at $133,660 (May 2025). It publishes no CMO line, so read it as a floor for senior marketing management, not a CMO benchmark.

  • Indeed shows what employers advertise now. It runs lowest because postings include small companies.
  • Payscale gives percentiles from self-reported profiles. Its $99,000 to $299,000 base range is the widest honest picture of the market.
  • Robert Half reports what it placed candidates at, in three experience tiers. The guide is projected for 2027.
  • Built In is the only one of the five that shows base and total side by side. It shows no sample size.
  • Salary.com runs highest. Its 10th percentile, $300,911, is above the average of every other source here.

Why do CMO salary sites disagree by $200,000?

They measure different things. One site counts base pay, another adds bonus. One counts every person titled CMO, another counts only large employers. Two use job postings and one uses anonymous replies.

Read each figure with its basis before you compare. A posting average is lower than a placed-executive average because postings include small companies, and placed executives skew to larger ones.

Use a range for your size, not a national average. National averages mix every company size. The size table in the next section is a better guide for a company between $25 million and $100 million.

  • Who is in the sample. A CMO title at a 20-person company and at a $2 billion company are the same row on most sites.
  • How the data was collected. Postings state a range. Surveys record what people were paid. Recruiters report what they placed.
  • Date. Robert Half's guide is projected for 2027. The others describe 2026.
  • Overlap. Salary.com's 10th percentile, $300,911, is above Payscale's 90th, $299,000. The two describe almost different markets.

How does CMO pay change with company size?

More than any other factor. At companies under $25 million in revenue, a CMO's base runs $175,000 to $250,000. Above $5 billion it runs $525,000 to $725,000 (JRG Partners, July 2026).

A CMO at a $50 million company and one at a $4 billion company share a title and hold different jobs, so compare like with like. Revenue moves pay much more than headcount does. Salary.com's average rises only 18% from a 50-person startup to a company of 5,000 or more. JRG's midpoint triples across its revenue tiers. JRG calls its figures directional and does not disclose a sample.

Bonus rises with size too: 30% to 50% of base at mid-market companies and 50% to 75% at larger enterprises (JRG, 2026). Plan for base plus bonus, not base alone.

  • Industry. JRG says consumer products, retail and technology pay the strongest premiums. Healthcare and financial services pay solidly. Industrial and B2B businesses sit below the median unless the role carries explicit revenue accountability.
  • Ownership. An aggregator reports higher bonus targets at private-equity-backed and public companies than at founder-owned ones, with no source or date (GTM 8020, 2026). We do not reproduce its industry dollar ranges for the same reason.
  • Equity. At $25 million to $100 million in revenue, total direct compensation runs $325,000 to $550,000 against target cash of $300,000 to $450,000. The difference is stock and long-term pay (JRG, 2026).
  • Revenue accountability. JRG ties higher pay to explicit ownership of the revenue number. Ask whether the offer names one.

What does a fractional CMO charge, and what do they earn?

Most charge $125 to $200 an hour, or $7,500 to $12,000 a month for about 15 hours a week (Go Fractional, October 2026). Over a year, one client at those retainers pays a fractional CMO $90,000 to $144,000 before tax, tools and benefits.

The two prices agree. $174 an hour for 15 hours a week comes to about $11,300 a month. One practitioner's own page gives a worked case: $250 an hour for 40 hours a month is $120,000 a year from one client (CMOx).

A fractional CMO's own income is the sum of their clients. One vendor guide says they serve two to four at once (RankedCMO, a vendor claim with no data behind it). Price comes from scope, so read what a fractional CMO is for a mid-market business before you compare quotes.

  • The people who do the work. An advisor plans. Someone still builds the pages, runs the ads and calls the leads. If the retainer has no team, budget for one.
  • Tools and data. CRM seats, call tracking and reporting. A new leader often asks for one or two in month one.
  • Media. Ad spend sits outside the fee. Ask whether it runs on your card and accounts, at cost.
  • Your time. Plan an hour a week with the CEO and a monthly review of the numbers.
  • Contract type. Most are independent contractors paid on a 1099, with no payroll taxes or benefits. If you set their hours and direct their method, ask counsel before you sign, because the IRS looks at control, money and the relationship.

Hourly, retainer or project: how should I pay a fractional CMO?

A monthly retainer fits when you want one person to own a number. An hourly rate fits a second opinion. A project fee fits a plan, an audit or a launch with a clear end.

This is our operating judgment, built on the price ranges below. Pay for a result you can check in your CRM, not for hours logged.

To compare quotes, turn each into a monthly number. Multiply the hourly rate by hours a week, then by 52 and divide by 12. At $250 an hour and 15 hours a week that is $16,250 a month, well above a $12,000 retainer for the same hours.

How much does an interim CMO cost?

$15,000 to $40,000 a month for 30 or more hours a week, over 3 to 6 months. That is $75,000 to $200,000 in total (RankedCMO, July 2026). Day rates run $1,500 to $3,500.

An interim CMO covers a gap: the leader left, a launch is near, or a sale needs a steady hand. A fractional CMO is an ongoing operating model.

These are vendor figures, and the page cites no study. Two claims on it have no traceable source: that 15% to 25% of interim engagements convert to full-time, and that firm-sourced interim CMOs carry a 30% to 50% markup. Treat both as sales talk until a firm shows its data.

  • An interim CMO fits when the leader has left and the plan must keep moving.
  • It fits when a launch, a sale or a funding round is 3 to 6 months away and needs a steady senior hand.
  • It fits as a bridge while you run a full-time search, so the months of hiring are not months without a leader.
  • It does not fit when the job is to build a plan and one proof. That is a fractional CMO's first 90 days, at a lower monthly cost.

Full-time, fractional, interim or agency: which costs what?

Compare total cost, hours, start time and risk, not salary against retainer. A full-time CMO costs about $284,000 in year one. The other options run from $75,000 to $240,000.

An agency retainer buys a team, and its strategic leadership is often limited (GTM 8020, 2026). A mid-market retainer of $10,000 to $20,000 a month is $120,000 to $240,000 a year. Read in-house or agency before you choose.

Year two changes the sum. A full-time CMO then costs $287,281 a year with the same inputs, because the search fee and the empty months are gone. A $12,000 retainer stays at $144,000. The gap of $143,281 now buys the extra hours, and whether you need them is the real question.

  • Read the cost first. Full-time is the only option where most of the first-year money is spent before the leader leads.
  • Read the hours second. A fractional CMO gives about 15 hours a week. If your job needs 40, you are buying the wrong thing.
  • Read the start time third. A search takes months, and a signed fractional scope does not. Speed matters when growth is stalled.
  • Read the risk last. Every option fails if no one owns a number. Price does not fix that.

What does a full-time CMO really cost in year one?

About $284,409, not $191,521. The salary is half the bill. The rest is bonus, benefits, a search fee and the months you pay for before the plan starts.

These are the inputs in our cost calculator, so the page and the tool agree. Change any of them in the tool below.

The sum errs on the cautious side. Benefits at 30% of base are below the BLS private-industry share, which is about 43% of wages. A 20% bonus is below JRG's 30% to 50% mid-market target. Raise either input and the gap widens.

The sum also leaves out equity and long-term pay, which JRG adds to cash pay at larger companies, and any team the CMO needs. Add those to your own version.

When does each option pay? A rule by company size

Match the option to the job, not to the price. A cheaper option that leaves the number unowned costs more in the end. If the job is a plan and an owner for one number, a fractional CMO fits. If the job is running a large team every day, hire full-time. If the leader just left, an interim covers the gap.

The rule below is our operating judgment, not a study. The pay bands next to it are sourced.

Tenure is the strongest argument for care. Median CMO tenure is 36 months (Findem and CMO Huddles, 2026) and 4.1 years at S&P 500 companies (Spencer Stuart, 2026). Six months of search and ramp is a sixth of a typical stay.

  2. Did the leader just leave, or is a launch or sale 3 to 6 months away? Use an interim CMO for the bridge.
  3. Does leading marketing take 30 or more hours a week, every week? Then hire full-time, and write the job description from what the fractional leader built.
  4. Still unsure? Start fractional. It is the one option you can end on 30 days' notice with a cost you know in advance (our judgment).

What does the cost calculator below do?

It compares the first-year cost of a full-time CMO with a fractional retainer, using your own numbers. Every input starts at the sourced default shown in this article.

It adds bonus, benefits and the search fee to the salary, then removes the months you pay before the CMO leads. It shows the gap and the cost per month of real leadership. It is arithmetic, not a forecast, so it will not tell you whether a given person will succeed. It tells you what the seat costs before they start.

Change the salary to your offer and the retainer to your quote.

  • You enter: base salary, bonus percentage, benefits percentage, search fee percentage, months to hire, months to ramp and the monthly retainer.
  • You read: the full-time cost in year one, the fractional cost, the gap between them and the cost per month the CMO is actually leading.
  • Try your own offer first, then a high case: a 40% bonus, 4 months to hire and 6 to ramp. Year-one cost rises to $297,496, and each month of real leadership costs $148,748.

Questions leaders ask

What is the average CMO salary in the US?

It depends on the source. Indeed shows $177,421 (October 2026), Payscale $192,996 (October 2026), Built In $225,908 and Salary.com a median of $374,414. All are base pay. Built In puts total pay with bonus at $293,575. Company size moves it most: JRG puts base at $175,000 to $250,000 under $25 million in revenue.

How much does a fractional CMO make a year?

One retainer of $7,500 to $12,000 a month pays $90,000 to $144,000 a year before tax, tools and benefits (Go Fractional, October 2026). A fractional CMO's total income is the sum of their clients. One vendor guide says they serve two to four at a time, which has no study behind it.

What is the hourly rate for a fractional CMO?

The middle half of US postings sits between $125 and $200 an hour, with an average of $174 (Go Fractional, October 2026). Advisors who quote their own rates often say $200 to $350, and one marketplace guide reports $200 to $450 from a small sample. Posted rates run lower than quoted rates.

How much does an interim CMO cost?

Vendor guides give $15,000 to $40,000 a month for 30 or more hours a week, over 3 to 6 months, or $1,500 to $3,500 a day (RankedCMO, July 2026). That is $75,000 to $200,000 in total. The page cites no study, so treat the range as a quote to test, not a benchmark.

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?

In year one, almost always. With our calculator defaults a full-time hire costs $284,409 against $144,000 for a fractional retainer at $12,000 a month. The full-time CMO also leads for only 6 of the 12 months after hiring and ramp. After year one the gap depends on how many hours the job needs.

How much does a CMO make at a small company?

JRG Partners puts base pay at $175,000 to $250,000 at companies under $25 million in revenue, with target total cash of $225,000 to $375,000 (July 2026). Many owner-led businesses that size use a fractional CMO instead, at $5,000 to $15,000 a month depending on stage (Fractional Pulse, 2026).

Why do CMO salary websites show different numbers?

They count different things. Some report base pay and others include bonus. Some use job postings, some anonymous replies and some placed executives. Company size changes the sample too. The highest average we found is 2.1 times the lowest. Compare only figures with the same basis and the same date.

Do CMOs get bonuses and equity?

Yes. Target bonuses run 30% to 50% of base at mid-market companies and 50% to 75% at larger enterprises (JRG Partners, 2026). Built In's average additional cash is $67,667 on top of $225,908 base. Public-company CMOs also get stock: The Conference Board puts median total pay at $1,917,000 in the Russell 3000.
