The short answer
A fractional CMO averages $174 an hour, scoped at about 15 hours a week (Go Fractional, October 2026).
A full-time CMO has an average base salary of $191,521 (Payscale, July 2026) and stays 4.1 years at an S&P 500 company (Spencer Stuart, 2026).
No independent study has measured whether fractional CMOs raise revenue, so judge one on named references and a revenue number.

How big is the fractional CMO market?
Every source says the market is growing. They disagree on its size, so rely on the direction and the shape, not the dollar figure.
The one cost driver Mordor Intelligence ranks first is the price and risk of a full-time hire. Government data shows the wider pool of independent professionals is large and still growing.

How much does a fractional CMO cost?
About $174 an hour, or $7,500 to $12,000 a month. The price rises with company size because the hours rise with it.
These are listed and asked prices from marketplaces, not signed contracts. Employers post lower rates than candidates ask, and the gap is real.

How much does a full-time CMO cost?
A CMO's base salary averages $191,521, and base is not the whole bill. Benefits add about 30% of employer cost across private industry, and the search adds a fee and about six weeks.

How long does a CMO stay in the job?
Four years at a large public company. Short tenure is usually a promotion, not a firing, so a short stay is not proof of a bad hire.
This is the best published count of CMO tenure, and it covers the largest public companies only. Use it as a guide for your own hire.
| Statistic | Sample | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average CMO tenure is 4.1 years, against 5.0 years for all C-suite roles. Only COOs are shorter at 3.3 | 346 named CMOs of S&P 500 companies, June 2025 | Spencer Stuart, 2026 |

Who supplies fractional CMOs?
Mostly people with two or three clients, who find work through people they know. That tells you how to vet one: ask about the other clients and ask for references.
| Statistic | Sample | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 50% of fractional professionals manage two or three clients at once, and 27% manage one | 213 practitioners surveyed, April 2026 | Go Fractional, 2026 |

Do fractional CMOs deliver results?
We found no independent study that measures revenue results from fractional CMOs. Web Tonic's 2026 benchmark page reaches the same conclusion in a heading: outcome benchmarks do not exist yet.
Outcome claims on page one, such as faster growth with a fractional CMO, are credited to a marketing blog and name no study. Treat them as sales copy, and ask for named references, start dates and a revenue number instead. Results often depend on steps after the lead. See why marketing fails outside marketing.
Numbers you will see elsewhere, and the weight they deserve
Several figures repeat across fractional CMO pages. We could not trace most of them to a study.
| Number | Where it comes from | Weight today |
|---|---|---|
| The fractional CMO market is $1.27 billion in 2026 | A page-one article traces it to a piece labelled sponsored. An analyst estimate for the same year is $2.28 billion. | Low. Use the growth direction, not either dollar figure. |
| Fractional leaders doubled from 60,000 to 120,000 in two years | Credited to a content site on one page and a conference report on another. No dataset found, and one page dates both ends 2026. | Low. |
| LinkedIn fractional titles grew 5,400%, from 2,000 to 110,000 | Repeated by consultancies and job boards. We found no LinkedIn dataset behind it. | Low. |
| 25% of US companies use fractional hiring | The page cites a marketing blog and names no survey or sample. | Low. The government contractor share is 7.4% of workers, a different measure. |
| Companies grow revenue 29% with a fractional CMO against 19% without | The page cites the same blog and names no study. | Low. See the results section above. |
| A fractional CMO works about nine hours a week | Attributed on one page to Go Fractional data. Go Fractional's live benchmark says about 15 hours a week, and Fractional Pulse says 15 to 25 hours a week at $3M to $10M. | Low. Use the ranges in the tables. |
| The average full-time CMO salary is $347,000 | A page-one heading. The same page's body text says $213,000. | Low. Payscale shows $191,521 base and $101,000 to $353,000 total pay. |
| The average fractional engagement lasts 71 months | The page cites a third-party site, not a study. | Low. Fractional Pulse says 9 to 18 months. |
| CMO tenure is 44 months | Cited to a Spencer Stuart page dated 2017, as if current (pre-2020). | Dated. The 2026 study uses a different sample, so do not compare them. |
What it means for a business like yours
The hours you buy set the cost more than the title does. At the average $174 an hour for 15 hours a week, a fractional CMO costs $135,720 a year. A median retainer of $10,000 to $12,000 a month costs $120,000 to $144,000 a year. (Both figures are our arithmetic from the sources above.)
A full-time CMO at the average $191,521 base costs about $273,600 once benefits are added at the private-industry share of 30%. That is also our arithmetic, and it excludes bonus, equity and the $10,625 search. So a fractional CMO saves the most when you need 15 to 25 hours of senior time, not 40. If you also need the CRM, data and measurement owned, read about the technical CMO.
Pick by the decision you need made. If nobody owns the revenue number across marketing, sales and the agency, one senior person for 15 to 25 hours a week fixes that. If you need a department, hire one and budget for the 45 days and the fee. The CEO-CMO gap is what a missing owner looks like.
A business at $20 million in revenue spending Gartner's 7.8% would have a marketing budget near $1.56 million. Gartner's panel is mostly companies above $1 billion, so treat that as a reference point, not a target.
What to check this week
Write down what you pay today for marketing leadership, including benefits, bonus and the agency retainer. Then write down the one revenue number your marketing leader owns. If there is no name next to it, that is the gap.
If you are hiring, set the hours first: 15 to 25 a week for a business at $3M to $10M, 20 to 30 at $10M to $30M. Collect three quotes and compare them with the $125 to $200 an hour band and the retainer ranges above.
Ask every candidate for two named references, the start date of each engagement and the revenue result. Agree a 90-day review and a 9 to 18 month term. For the first 90 days, read what a fractional CMO does in the first 90 days, and for pricing detail see fractional CMO cost. You may quote any number here with a link to this page.
How we chose these sources
We opened every page or file cited, on October 18, 2026, and read each number from the source itself. We took government, Gartner, SHRM and Spencer Stuart data first, and used marketplace data only where it carries a sample size and a date. Three marketplaces supply the fractional rates. Their data comes from posted jobs and asked rates, so it describes prices, not signed contracts.
We left out any number we could not open or trace. That removed the LinkedIn counts of fractional titles, the Upwork independent-worker release and the Deloitte and Duke CMO Survey revenue share, because we could not read a primary page for them. A 2026 Web Tonic page quotes Go Fractional at $180 an hour. The dated June report we opened says $176, so we cite the report. Live benchmarks move, and a dated snapshot is easier to check.
Questions leaders ask
How much does a fractional CMO cost?
The average rate is $174 an hour, and the middle half of postings run $125 to $200 (Go Fractional, October 2026). Median monthly retainers are $10,000 to $12,000 for 15 to 25 hours of work (Fractional Pulse, 2026), rising from $8,000 to $15,000 at $3M to $10M recurring revenue to $15,000 to $25,000 above $30M.
How many hours a week does a fractional CMO work?
A typical fractional CMO role is scoped at about 15 hours a week (Go Fractional live benchmark, October 2026). Fractional Pulse shows 15 to 25 hours a week at $3M to $10M recurring revenue, 20 to 30 at $10M to $30M and 25 to 35 above $30M.
Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?
Usually, at 15 to 25 hours of senior time. A full-time CMO averages $191,521 base (Payscale, 2026), and benefits add about 30% of employer cost across private industry (BLS, June 2026). At 15 hours a week and $174 an hour, a fractional CMO costs $135,720 a year, so the hours you buy decide the saving.
How long does a CMO stay in the job?
The average S&P 500 CMO stays 4.1 years, against 5.0 years for the C-suite overall (Spencer Stuart, 2026). Of 218 CMOs who left between 2021 and 2025, 62% were promoted or moved to a similar or bigger role.
How long does it take to hire a CMO?
The median executive role takes 45 days to fill, from opening the requisition to an accepted offer, and a median executive hire costs $10,625 (SHRM, 2025). The new person starts after that, so plan for more than six weeks.
How big is the fractional CMO market?
Mordor Intelligence estimates $2.28 billion in 2026, growing 9.01% a year to $3.51 billion in 2031. Other pages quote $1.27 billion, so use the growth direction, not one dollar figure.
Do fractional CMOs deliver better results?
No independent study measures it, and we found none. Claims such as 29% growth against 19% are credited to a blog, not a study, so ask each candidate for named references and a revenue result.
What share of companies use fractional executives?
No government count exists. The nearest published measure is contractors: 11.9 million independent contractors, 7.4% of total employment (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, July 2023). The popular 25% figure for fractional hiring names no study.
